Van donderdag 29 oktober t/m zondag 1 november brengt Rotterdam een ode aan Jane Jacobs. From Thursday, October 29 to Sunday, November 1 Rotterdam brings a tribute to Jane Jacobs.
De Canadees-Amerikaanse stadsactiviste overleed in 2006 op 89-jarige leeftijd, maar vormt voor velen nog steeds een inspiratiebron voor een humane stad. Het Architectuur Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) vertoont films over haar leven en haar nalatenschap in de stedelijke vernieuwing, er zijn stadstours, lezingen, workshops en een voorleessessie van haar zojuist in het Nederlands vertaalde boek Dood en leven van grote Amerikaanse steden, 50 jaar na de eerste druk.
Schrijfster, intellectueel, analiste, moreel denker, activiste, self-made economist en als krachtige critica van starre autoriteiten een notoire ‘pain in the ass’: Jane Jacobs. De vrouw met de karakteristieke jampotglazen bril heeft zichzelf onsterfelijk gemaakt met haar scherpe stadsobservaties, haar pleidooi voor gemengde buurten en een kleinschalige stadseconomie. ‘You’re forgetting the people and the streets’ schreef ze in 1961 in haar manifest tegen de modernistische planologie Death and life of great American cities. Actief protesteerde ze tegen sloop van het monumentale Penn Station en tegen de sociaal verwoestende doorbraken van expressways. Bijna 50 jaar na haar eerste publicatie en acties is haar werk en houding ten opzichte van stadsplanning vaak nog opvallend toepasbaar. De brute modernisten zijn vervangen door snelscorende projectontwikkelaars en murwmakende bureaucraten. Jane Jacobs vormt daarom nog steeds ee inspiratiebron voor veel activisten en stedenbouwkundigen.
Jane Jacobs Wandeling+Film
De Jane Jacobs week wordt georganiseerd in een samenwerking van het Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam, the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, NAi, Trancity en SUN Bookpublishers. Meer informatie over het gehele Jane Jacobsprogramma is te vinden op www.janejacobs.nl.
Ervaar Noord en ontmoet er de mensen die er wonen en werken. We starten in het Rotabs-style center, dat u ook kunt bezoeken. Vanuit Rotabs lopen en fietsen we (in een loop- en fietsgroep, dus een fiets meenemen is niet noodzakelijk) door Noord. Professionals van onder meer BVR, PWS, Stipo, Galerie op de Rotte, stichting Kinderparadijs Meidoorn, Hogeschool Rotterdam, Inspiring Cities en anderen vertellen u op verschillende plekken over Jane Jacobs, de kracht en de ontwikkeling van het gebied. In het Rotabs style center is de vertoning van de films Urban Goddess: Jane Jacobs Reconsidered (Sharon Bliss, 2008) en “New York, the city and the World” (Ric Burns, 1999). (Kies uit één van de films).

The Canadian-American city activist died in 2006 at the age of 89, but for many she is still an inspiration for a humane city. The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) shows films about her life and her legacy in urban renewal, there are city tours, lectures, workshops and a dutch reading session of her book Death and life of great American cities, finally translated in dutch 50 years after the first edition.
Writer, intellectual, analyst, moral thinker, activist, self-made economist and a strong critic of inflexible authority, Jane Jacobs was a notorious ‘pain in the ass’. The woman with the characteristic jam jar glasses has made himself immortal with her sharp urban observations, her advocacy of mixed neighbourhoods and small scale city economy. ‘You’re forgetting the people and the streets” she wrote in 1961 in her manifesto against modernist planning Death and life of great American cities. She actively protested against demolition of the historic New York Penn Station and the socially and physically devastating breakthroughs of express ways. Almost 50 years after the first publication, her work and attitude towards urban planning is often strikingly applicable. The brutalist modernists have been replaced by hit and run promoters and bureaucrats. Jane Jacobs is therefore still a source of inspiration for many activists and urban planners.
Jane Jacobs biketour+film
Experience the Northern part of Rotterdam and meet the people who live and work there. We start in the Rotabs-style center, which you can also visit. From there we start walking. Professionals including BVR, PWS, Stipo, Gallery on the Rotte, the Kinderparadijs Meidoorn Foundation, the University Rotterdam, Inspiring Cities and others talk about the different Jane Jacobs places here, the strength and the development of Rotterdam Noord. In The Rotabs style center is the screening of the film “Urban Goddess: Jane Jacobs, Reconsidered” (Sharon Bliss, 2008) and “New York, the City and the World” (Ric Burns, 1999).
