Yes, we recognize the beauties, because the short animation film Logorama we screened at our festival is nominated for an Academy Award! We keep our fingers crossed for the people of H5, especially Nicolas Schmerkin.
Snakebit is made for American public television, but has not been aired. AFFR is therefore even more proud that the movie is to prepremiere in the Netherlands. The movie is eagerly awaited for months by many fans. Sam Wainwright Douglas, the director is one of the special guests on the AFFR.
Snakebit is a documentary about the architect Samuel Mockbee and his unique radical building program called “Rural Studio” that he started in poorly Alabama, after he had left a prestigious architectural firm. With the appealing slogan “shelter for the soul” he motivated many engineering students to volunteer to design houses for the local poor community. The Rural Studio demonstrates as no other program that architecture has strong roots in the community and affects the lives of people en their environment directly. Through donations and donated materials they could design houses for the residents. It led to surprising, and unique designs tailored to sometimes eccentric inhabitants, including “The Music Man”. Never before seen interviews are part of the film and slowly the image arises of this special and relevant way of designing in and for a community. The current mortgage crisis in America shows that the time for such projects are not a least bit outdated. There should be a much larger movement motivated to designs shelters for everyone. And Snakebit shows sharp that only a small group of people are needed to change the world.
Snakebit, Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio (Sam Wainwright Douglas, 2009). Screening Saturday, October 31 (20:00) & Sunday, November 1 (14:00).
