OCTOBER 2011

Preview The Garden

Citydoc

The Garden (Scott Hamilton Kennedy, 2008)

Sometimes real life is more dramatic than a strong story. A good reason to watch some documentaries breathlessly.

The Garden (Hamilton Kennedy, 2008) is a good example for such a documentary. The location is a plot of land (5,5 hectares) in South Central Los Angeles. The municipality dispossessed the plot to build a combustion furnace. Because of successful resistance by the local community this plan was cancelled. After the 1993’s riots in Los Angeles the municipality lend the plot of land for a ‘community garden’. The poorest inhabitants could grow their own food en make life easier.  The South Central Gardners – mainly Latino’s with an agricultural background – transformed it in a decade into a pleasure-garden with papaja’s, corn and lemon. This idea appeared to be very successful: the project became the biggest ‘urban gardening’-project in the US.

But, in 2003 the former owner claimed the ground. The American law says that if the plot was not used for the original aim – in this case a furnace – the former owner can repurchase it.  This results in an extraordinary process with roles for a weak politician (she was later even re-elected!), the hostile community of concerned citizens, the desperate gardners, fundraising movie stars, an angry judge and an indignant owner. The documentary portraits not only the rise of the community garden. It also shows that several communities are capable to sway their destiny. The communities are fruitful soil for politicians as well for rivalry between groups.

The Garden (Scott Hamilton Kennedy, 2008) is screened at AFFR2009.
