OCTOBER 2011

Caves of the supervillains

Danger: Diabolik is a film that is scarcely inferior to Barbarella (and by the same producer, Dino De Laurentiis), yet it is nowhere near as well known nor can it be seen in cinemas anymore. Reason enough for the AFFR to screen this fabulous cultfilm.

Directed by horror movie maker Mario Bava, it is based on the comic strip character Diabolik, and forty years on it is still a joy to watch. From his grotto – complete with rotating bed and transparent shower cell, of course – Diabolik plans successful jewellery heists and bank hold-ups. The 1960s set designs by, among others, Ken Adam (James Bond, Dr. Strangelove) and Douglas Trumbull (2001 A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) are not just agreeable camp but a serious inspiration for present-day architects.
