The fifth edition of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) is over… This year the event has put itself for good on the international cultural map. Programming 120 movies, city tours and talk shows, the festival managed to triple its visitors compared to previous editions. This goal – to promote interest in architecture – was largely achieved. This weekend was also the foundation for close cooperation with ten film festivals architecture at European and even world level.
From October 29 to November 1 AFFR screened films in which architecture and the city play the leading role. There was a lively festival atmosphere in the attractive foyer of cinema Cinerama: both architectural fanatics as students and filmlovers met in the foyer, drew circles in their program magazines and talked about the films with a beer in between screenings. A full house, for both the blockbusters and lesser-known films, often selling out completely. The big hits of the festival – the ones that were chock full of visitors and judged very positively – were Infinite Space, Oscar Niemeyer and the world premiere of Herman Hertzberger: Ik zag ruimte (2009, Kees Hin). Infinite Space, a film about the glamorous buildings of the American architect John Lautner, was part of a special selection of American films, including the avant premiere of Snakebit and the opening movie Visual Acoustics. The city tours were very successful. The Rotterdam Planning Disasters biketour was particularly of a lot of interest. The bicycle guides showed the participants ‘planning disasters’ of Rotterdam. From the ‘Blunderput’ (blooperwell) the Blaakse Bos, the Peperklip to the Essalam Mosque.
This weekend the AFFR welcomed over 30 international guests. Filmmakers and architects, but also the organizers of film festivals worldwide architecture got together. A seminar was initiated by AFFR on the opportunities to reinforce each other. With success, because AFFR 2009 is the starting year in which architecture festivals join hands at the international level to work together.
